alt Dr. S. Pete Worden (Brig. Gen., USAF, ret.) is the current NASA Ames Research Center Director. Prior to becoming Director, Dr. Worden was a Research Professor of Astronomy, Optical Sciences and Planetary Sciences at the University of Arizona where his primary research direction was the development of large space optics for national security and scientific purposes and near-earth asteroids.

In addition to his former position with the University of Arizona, Dr. Worden served as a consultant to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) on space-related issues. During the 2004 Congressional Session Dr. Worden worked as a Congressional Fellow with the Office of Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS), where he served as Senator Brownback's chief advisor on NASA and space issues. Dr. Worden has written or co-written more than 150 scientific technical papers in astrophysics, space sciences and strategic studies. He was a scientific co-investigator for two NASA space science missions. He and his wife Nancy reside in Placitas, New Mexico.

alt With his thirst of adventure on land and under water having been quenched, the only place left for Richard Garriott to explore is space itself.  Having caught the space bug as a child from his astronaut father, Richard has held a passion towards the space industry and has invested in various related ventures such as the Zero-G corporation, X-Prize, Spacehab, and is currently vice-chairman of Space Adventures.  He has even participated in many space simulated training activities such as Zero-G parabolas, centrifuge simulations of Soyuz launch and landing, and Mig 25 flights to the edge of space.

Richard serves as Vice Chairman of Space Adventures, the world’s leading private space tourism company.  With a goal of opening the space frontier to private citizens, Space Adventures has since sent the world’s only five private space tourists to the International Space Station, with Richard set to be the sixth.

alt Jon Wellinghoff was named Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the agency that oversees wholesale electric transactions and interstate electric transmission and gas transportation in the United States, by President Barack Obama on March 19, 2009. A member of the Commission since 2006, the U.S. Senate reconfirmed him to a full, five-year FERC term in December 2007. 

Chairman Wellinghoff is an energy law specialist with more than 30 years experience in the field. Before joining FERC, he was in private practice and focused exclusively on client matters related to renewable energy, energy efficiency and distributed generation. While in the private sector, Chairman Wellinghoff represented an array of clients from federal agencies, renewable developers, and large consumers of power to energy efficient product manufacturers and clean energy advocacy organizations.


Yvonne Cagle, NASA Astronaut

alt Selected by NASA in April 1996, Dr. Cagle reported to the Johnson Space Center in August 1996. She completed two years of training and evaluation, and is qualified for flight assignment as a mission specialist. Initially assigned to the Astronaut Office Operations Planning Branch, supporting Shuttle and Space Station, followed by a special assignment to NASA’s Ames Research Center. Dr. Cagle is currently assigned as the lead ARC Astronaut Science Liaison and Strategic Relationships Manager for Google and other Silicon Valley Programmatic Partnerships. Dr. Cagle’s groundbreaking work is preserving historic NASA space legacy data while, simultaneously, galvanizing NASA’s lead in global mapping, sustainable energies, green initiatives, and disaster preparedness.

Dr. Cagle is a consulting professor for Stanford University’s Dept of Cardiovascular Medicine to the Department of Electrical Engineering and has conducted and published research on various biotechnologies. Dr. Cagle is on the Advisory Committee for the TMC National Center for Human Performance. She is also a Clinical Assistant Professor at UTMB, Galveston, and has served on the Volunteer Family Practice Clinical Faculty at the University of California, Davis, California. While with the USAFR, she was assigned to the Pentagon Flight Medicine/Special Mission Clinic. Dr. Cagle is a certified FAA Senior Aviation Medical Examiner and has been ACLS Instructor qualified.

alt Steve Isakowitz was sworn in June 1, 2007 as Chief Financial Officer of the Department of Energy after being unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate. As CFO, Mr. Isakowitz plays a vital role in the Department’s $24 billion budget that supports important energy, scientific, and national security investments. He has overall responsibility for the Department’s financial management, budget formulation and execution, program analysis and evaluation, corporate information systems, and loan guarantee program.

Previously, Mr. Isakowitz was a corporate manager and senior engineer at Lockheed Martin Corporation and a senior consultant at Booz, Allen & Hamilton. He is also the recipient of the Presidential Distinguished Rank Award, a top award for executive performance, and an author of a technical book on space launch vehicles. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Mr. Isakowitz graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in aerospace engineering.

Ms. Lovelace, as President of Wellford Energy Advisors, has nearly 15 years of experience in the government and business sectors including specific expertise in clean energy technology funding.  As an alternative energy lobbyist and consultant, she has combined her expertise in the financial sector, corporate affairs, and government affairs to help clients obtain federal funding and formulate sustainability strategies in the areas of climate change, renewable energy, and energy efficiency.  

She has also assisted clients with regulatory issues, policy promotion and public/private partnerships by working at the nexus of Congress, the White House, Federal Agencies -- such as the Department of Energy -- and Wall Street.  Ms. Lovelace has represented a variety of clients ranging from nonprofit groups to clean energy technology start-ups to the world’s largest retailer. 
Ms. Lovelace gained political campaign experience on George W. Bush’s first Texas gubernatorial campaign in the early 1990’s.  She holds a degree in Government from Dartmouth College and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the Tuck School at Dartmouth.

alt Rebeca has always been keen in science: she was a gold medal for the National Chemistry Olympiad, a bronze medal for the National Physics Olympiad, and the first prize a national cancer research contest in Argentina. Rebeca was ranked first out of 2500 students five years in a row at the Colegio National de Buenos Aires secondary school. She has demonstrated leadership skills by serving as the president of the Club Argentino at MIT for several semesters, and by representing the second generation Korean students at the Korean Science and Engineering Association. She was also involved in Thinkcycle and Design that Matters, both initiatives that attempted to match real local needs with sustainable solutions. 

Rebeca has significant fieldwork experience in Latin America and India. She is currently pursuing her PhD degree in the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Environment and Resources at Stanford University. Her thesis topic is based on the role of social network structures on the performance of water cooperatives in Argentina. Her research was recently featured in CNET. Rebeca is seeking to integrate institutional approaches and entrepreneurial principles to increase the efficiency and improve distributional effect of water management in Latin America. She has recently been invited to be a Senior Advisor for the MIT 100K Clean Energy Prize. Avid runner, rugby player, enthusiastic dancer and passionate reader, Rebeca enjoys traveling and practicing her Spanish, Italian, French and Korean language skills.

alt Steve Visco co-founded PolyPlus in Berkeley in 1990 and as split his time between the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and PolyPlus since that time. At LBNL he has focused his energies on the development of fuel cell technology. At PolyPlus he is developing a new generation of ultra-lightweight batteries based on unique water-stable lithium electrodes. PolyPlus has more than 50 issued U.S. patents, a large number of international patents, and many pending applications.

At the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab Visco has several programs in the field of solid state ionics including the development of solid oxide fuel cell technology. In addition to publishing our work, he has an extensive patent portfolio, much of which has been licensed to industry.

alt Prior to founding The Westly Group, Steve Westly served as the Controller and Chief Fiscal Officer of the state of California - the world's sixth largest economy.   As Controller, he chaired the State Lands Commission and served on 63 other boards and commissions, including CalPERS and CalSTRS, the nation's two largest public pension funds, which together invest more than $350 billion.   During his four-year term, Mr. Westly spearheaded innovative tax programs that helped close the State's budget deficit and also led an effort to commit more than $1 billion to clean technology investments.   In the 2008 election cycle Mr. Westly served as a state co-chair and a National Finance Committee member of the Obama for America campaign.

Mr. Westly holds a bachelor's degree from Stanford University and an MBA from Stanford's Graduate School of Business, where he served on the faculty for five years.   Mr. Westly and his wife, Anita, run the Westly Foundation, which provides education and health care services for children and underserved communities throughout California.

NASA Watch has been cited as a news source multiple times in Congressional hearings by the Chairman of the House Science Committee. In 1998, as editor of NASA Watch, Keith was asked to submit testimony for hearings held on NASA's 40th Anniversary by the House Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics. alt Internationally celebrated sleight of hand artist Patrick Martin has entertained for the White House during three administrations, and was featured at four Olympic Arts Festivals as well as on the recent television special “Masters of Illusion”.  Mr. Martin was a recent guest of the Chinese government at an international conference in Shanghai where he presented a lecture on the techniques and psychology of western magic. Patrick Martin was the first conjuror to be honored with two prestigious ‘Grand Prix de Magie’ awards for his artistry both on stage and at close quarters. He is often consulted to create illusions for television, film and the theatre, and has designed magical special effects for the San Francisco Opera and for the Salle Garnier Opera House in Monte Carlo, Moanaco.
This evening Mr. Martin will be presenting a few of his favorite mysteries, as well as sharing thoughts on the art of illusion and it's effect on the mind.

Prior to founding Prodea Systems, Anousheh served as co-founder, CEO and chairman of Telecom Technologies, Inc.  The company successfully merged with Sonus Networks, Inc., in 2000.

alt Ari Meisel started his first company, Liontex, when he was 12 and just never stopped. Now he is 27 and has just started his fifth company, LEED Pro to do green building consulting.  He has always been interested in different things and try to take them on at every opportunity.

After graduating from college, Ari went to visit a friend in upstate New York who showed him a group of 1880's cigar factories, which he bought with the vision of creating luxury lofts. He didn't have any experience with development or construction so he spent most of the next two years working in every trade that took place on the job. That was Arise Development. He also bought the historic Lackawanna train station that had been converted into an office building as part of his fifth LLC, Railroad Empire.

alt Tamin is a Principal at Catamount Ventures, where he invests in and helps build high-growth companies, with a particular focus on water, energy, and environment sectors. Tamin serves on the Board of Directors of Lux Research, and advises several startups and non-profits.  He also currently serves as Chairman & Executive Director of Imagine H2O (www.imagineh2o.org), a not-for-profit company that catalyzes water entrepreneurship with a business plan prize and incubator program.

Before joining Catamount, Tamin was a principal investor at Goldman, Sachs & Co., where he co-founded and managed Goldman Sachs E&P Capital to invest in private energy companies, and served on the founding team of the Goldman Sachs Specialty Lending Group. Prior to Goldman Sachs, Tamin held a business development position with Launch Media through its acquisition by Yahoo! Tamin holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and an AB with honors from Harvard University.

alt Douglas A. Comstock is the director of NASA's Innovative Partnerships Program (IPP). The IPP provides leveraged technology for NASA's mission directorates, programs and projects through investments and technology partnerships with industry, academia, government agencies and national laboratories.

Comstock previously served as the NASA comptroller, responsible for the preparation, tracking, presentation and defense of NASA's budget to the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the Congress. As the founding director of NASA's Strategic Investments Division, he was responsible for integrating NASA's strategic planning and program analysis supporting budget decisions into a single organization. Under his leadership, NASA was the first agency to achieve GREEN status as part of the President's Management Agenda for Budget and Performance Integration and NASA received its first honorable mention for the President's Quality Award.

Comstock has undergraduate degrees from the University of Washington in both mechanical engineering and architecture. He did his graduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received masters degrees in both aeronautics and astronautics, and technology and policy.

Lori Garver, Deputy Administrator, NASA

alt Nominated by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Lori Beth Garver began her duties as the Deputy Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration on July 17, 2009.

As deputy administrator, Garver is NASA's second in command. She is responsible to the administrator for providing overall leadership, planning, and policy direction for the agency. Garver represents NASA to the Executive Office of the President, Congress, heads of government agencies, international organizations, and external organizations and communities. She also oversees the work of NASA’s functional offices, including the Office of the Chief Financial Officer, Office of General Counsel and Office of Strategic Communications.

Glen Whitney

Glen Whitney received an undergraduate math degree from Harvard University and a Ph.D in mathematical logic from UCLA.  He began his career on the academic, theoretical side, teaching at the University of Michigan, then added the applied point of view as a hedge-fund quantitative analyst with Renaissance Technologies.  Whitney discovered the spirit of hands-on exploration as an elementary-school math club coach, and he's seen the value of math as a tool to give back to society, help to design the data collective systems used by the Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative.  Whitney currently serves on the school board of the Three Village Central School District.  Recently, Whitney left his full-time position to devote himself to opening the Museum of Mathematics, America's only museum of mathematics.  As Executive Director of the Museum, Whitney is working to change public perceptions of mathematics, and to improve the way we educate our youth in this country.  The Museum's Math Midway exhibit, a carnival-themed traveling exhibition on mathematics, demonstrates that math can be interactive, exciting, and fun.

Rafe Furst, Entrepreneur, Investor

Rafe Furst is an entrepreneur, investor and business leader whose passion is connecting people, ideas and resources to make good things happen faster.
Rafe began his career as an artificial intelligence researcher at Kestrel Institute. After seeing the first web browser (xmosaic) in the early 90s, Rafe left academia to co-found his first company, Pick’em Sports in 1996, which was sold to a public company in 1999.
Rafe has helped launch and run several other successful ventures including Expert Insight, BugleMe, iTripTV, and a “black swan” venture fund. Rafe also sits on the Board of Directors of, or strategically advises, both non-profit and for-profit companies including the Prevent Cancer Foundation, the Decision Education Foundation, All Day Buffet and LA Idea Project.
In 2003, Rafe and his good friend Phil Gordon spent a year attending sports events around the country. As part of their Ultimate Sports Adventure, Rafe and Phil were able to combine two passions of theirs: cancer prevention and poker. Together they launched the Bad Beat on Cancer initiative that encourages poker professionals to donate 1% of their winnings to preventing cancer.
Rafe received the 2007 Excellence in Cancer Awareness award from the Congressional Families Action for Cancer Awareness program. And this year Rafe was honored withthe 2010 Cancer Champion Award for his work raising funds for cancer prevention and early detection research, and raising the level of cancer prevention awareness, through the Bad Beat on Cancer initiative.
Rafe currently works on many projects that involve technology and social entrepreneurship, and is an active blogger on complex systems at EmergentFool.com. He holds an M.S. in Computer Science and B.S. in Symbolic Systems, both from Stanford University.

 

Overview

The Innovation Summit is the culmination of the Conrad Foundation’s Spirit of Innovation Awards program and is the launch pad for breakthrough technologies from high school innovators.  From April 8 to April 10th leading entrepreneurs and scientists will join the top young innovators and their teachers in a collaborative, social forum to help build the progressive technologies and the next-generation workforce for the 21st century.  It is truly a one-of-a-kind environment where seasoned business professionals join forces with the best young entrepreneurs.

What happens at the Innovation Summit?

•  Finalist Presentations – Just as entrepreneurs pitch their startups to investors, the tops finalist teams of high school students around the world will present their concepts to a panel of experts.  Teams are judged on their technologies and their plausibility in the real world.  The teams selected as Pete Conrad Scholars will receive over $300,000 in grants, research opportunities, and scholarships.

•  Speakers Session – During meals and special sessions, world-level speakers will present about innovation, entrepreneurship, and cutting edge science.  Each presentation will be followed by a collaborative discussion.

•  Yuri’s Night – This year the Innovation Summit is held in conjunction with the Bay Area Yuri’s Night celebration (www.ynba.org).  Yuri’s Night commemorates mankind’s first venture in space by Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961, and the launch of the first Space Shuttle by NASA exactly twenty years later.  It is the largest annual celebration of space exploration—and of mankind’s curiosity, scientific and technical achievements.

•  Reception and Networking – The Innovation Summit will hold evening networking reception for students, teachers, entrepreneurs, and scientists to mix, mingle, and most of all HAVE FUN!  These events will initiate lasting and meaningful relationships and will drive and inter-disciplinary, multi-generational community of innovation.  Last year Bjorn Turoque entertained the audience to close out an evening of excitement.

•  Awards Ceremony – The closing event of the Innovation Summit is our awards ceremony and presentation.  Extraordinary speakers and engaging entertainment will conclude the Spirit of Innovation Awards program and ring-in the next phase of development for the young innovators continuing in our community.
