2012-2013 Spirit of Innovation Challenge

Imagine getting the chance to develop a commercial product to help solve a real challenge facing our world today. If you’re ready to take your innovative science and technology idea to all-new heights, then the Spirit of Innovation Challenge is for you. Get your genius on!

This annual competition challenges high school student teams to use science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills to develop the products of tomorrow. Along the way, coaches, world-renowned scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs are there to mentor you and help turn your idea into a reality.

The Conrad Foundation believes high school students have the potential to create the next world-changing, commercially-viable product or service. The Spirit of Innovation Challenge invites students ages 13 – 18 from around the globe to Get Their Genius On and conceptualize a solution in the areas of:

Aerospace and Aviation
Green fuels, avionics, aerodynamics, human factors/cockpit design, aerospace human/life sciences, aircraft and vehicles, propulsion systems and other synthetic innovations

Energy and Environment
Energy storage, energy efficiency, renewable resources, sustainable land use, recycling solutions, environmental health, water resources, biodiversity, climate change, waste management, and other clean tech innovations

Cybertechnology and Security
Artificial intelligence applications, network defense systems, forensic sciences, smart cars, secure coding, counter intelligence technologies for government, energy, and healthcare safety

Skybox Out-of-the-Box Scholarship

The Conrad Foundation and Skybox Imaging are joining forces to add an additional opportunity for students to win a $5,000 scholarship for answering the question, “If you had access to daily high-resolution satellite imagery and high-definition video of thousands of locations on the planet from space, how would you use that data to change the world?”

To be eligible for the Skybox Out-of-the-Box scholarship, a team must identify ways Skybox Imaging’s timely satellite imagery would be used in the development of an innovative product or service in one of this year’s Conrad Challenge categories. There are possible applications in every category and range from the comparison of environments pre and post large-scale weather events to detecting vegetation change across continents to accurate models of land topography for construction.

The winning team will be invited to participate in the Innovation Summit where they will receive special recognition for the Skybox scholarship.

During the entry phase teams must mention Skybox Imaging technology in their abstract and check the box “Our team would use Skybox technology in the development of our product or service” before submitting on Oct. 24.
